Having Lunch with Pilots, Seeing Concerts for Free and other Cool Stuff I did in New Zealand

You guys may know that my first few months here in New Zealand were kind of a struggle. I expected to find a job easily and I didn't, so I had nothing to do and was spending money left and right. I had a really bad first job experience here that I never told you about. (Don't do fundraising guys, it's never worth it). I then flew down to Christchurch where I worked in a hostel and also in a cafĂ©. Sad thing was, I never really earned a lot of money, and after three months of working and another one and a half months of traveling I actually overdrafted my New Zealand credit card.

So yes, it was fun. But honestly, I met a lot of amazing people in Christchurch, and I actually came back to that hostel for another two weeks when I injured my knee and couldn't travel anymore.

And when I did come back, I started working for a company that gave me all kind of odd jobs. The first job I had with them was actually at a Phil Collins concert and I got to work the Cash Register. And we all got free pulled pork burgers (you may know, I'm kind of vegetarian right now so I stuck with my own food). It was a ton of fun, because it was super busy that day, and I did get to hear the concert.

Also, this cool Sperm Whale we saw

I also worked in the VIP Lounge at the Airport which was amazing because I had never been in a VIP Lounge before. And I got to eat food there as well and it was delicious. (You see a theme here: Lara gets food, Lara is happy). And my lunch room was actually the same room the pilots and flight attendants use. I geek out so much over the people that work on airplanes so that was definitely something special.

And I saw my first rugby match. I didn't really understand it, but it was cool to watch, and the people I was serving were (mostly) nice. We did have a few guests complaining about the new cup system and we had a racist guest where we actually needed to call security. But all in all, it was super fun.

Right now I'm again in Auckland, but this time I do have a job and I'm just waiting for my friend to arrive so that we can travel the North Island together. Also, it's just a little over two months and I'll be home, and in four months I'll be in Florida.

Okay, so the point of this weird, all over the place blog post is: While my first few months were hard, and traveling and being far away from home might not always be the easiest, I had so many cool experiences that I would've never had in Germany. And I'm really glad for those, and also, of course, for the people I met.

If you want, tell me in the comments about weird job experiences you had, either while traveling or at home.

Have a magical day,
Lara.
