Description:
An emotionally charged story of music, abuse and, ultimately, hope.
Beck hates his life. He hates his violent mother. He hates his home. Most of all, he hates the piano that his mother forces him to play hour after hour, day after day. He will never play as she did before illness ended her career and left her bitter and broken. But Beck is too scared to stand up to his mother, and tell her his true passion, which is composing his own music - because the least suggestion of rebellion on his part ends in violence.
When Beck meets August, a girl full of life, energy and laughter, love begins to awaken within him and he glimpses a way to escape his painful existence. But dare he reach for it? (Curtesy of Goodreads )
Okay, so I went into this book knowing it would rip my heart out. I knew it, but still I bawled like a kid. To be honest, I kind of put off reading this, because I knew what would happen. And maybe because I was scared I wouldn't like it, because I basically only read YA Fantasy. But as you can tell by my reading time, I flew through this. I probably could have finished it in one day if I hadn't been at a party on the 11th.
This book honestly is a rollercoaster of emotions: One minute you're just super sad and feel sorry for Beck (the main character). The next minute you're so angry at his stupidity that you just want to hurl the book around. And when August is in the frame it's just all cute and fluffy. Most of the time at least. This book so perfectly plays with your feelings and somehow betrays you without you even noticing.
As I have told the author herself, I hate and love her for this. I hate her, because it broke my heart (poor, poor Beck) and also because of the ending! I needed more! And I love her for giving the us this book.
At the beginning, we are thrown into the story, not exactly knowing what will happen. Especially if you are like me and do not read the summaries. And then, when we first meet August, I was sure there would be some kind of romantic relationship between them, because that's just the way Young Adult books normally are. I was glad that the book focused more on the friendship between them.
I'm not going to go into any more detail about the story, I'm just going to tell you that you need this book in your life. If you haven't read it yet, I suggest you visit your local bookstore and buy a copy. Even if you do end up not enjoying it (how?) the cover is definitely gorgeous.
Conclusion:
I have only one negative thing to say about this book: It was too short. I could have read a hundred more pages about Beck composing music, about Beck and August eating cake. About the dogs. This book has everything I love, music, a wholesome friendship, a great brother-sister relationship, heartbreak, cake, dogs... And at C. G. Dress, I need some vegan cake at my doorstep to make up for the heartbreak.
" What he wants most in the world
is to cut off hid own hands.
At the wrist would be best. "
